St. Margarets Golf Cub Golf Club

Club of the Month Archive

Driving through the grand entrance of St Margaret’s Golf Club, you know that you are in for something special.....

St Margaret’s Club HouseThe meandering driveway to the impressive "Swiss Chalet" style Club House allows you to contemplate what golfing treats are in store for you, and also, to take a few deep breaths as you are on the same well known track as many an international golfing legend. Built in 1992, St Margaret’s Golf Club is one of finest parkland courses in Ireland and has achieved much in its short but illustrious career. Two of Irelands finest course designers Pat Ruddy and Tony Craddock took responsibility, and testament to their hard work and foresight the course has now held 3 major tournaments. These include the PGA Irish Seniors, the Ladies Irish Open and, of course, the Irish PGA Championship, won of course by none other but local hero Padraig Harrington.

Playing St Margaret’s is an experience to be savoured and enjoyed thoroughly. It is situated a “stones throw” from Dublin’s City Centre hustle and bustle, and the frantic Dublin Airport - You will be amazed that you can find golfing solace in such close proximity.

Take time to have coffee and a sandwich in the lodge restaurant before teeing off. You will have the opportunity to study the pin positions on the 9th Hole and 18th Hole which could prove crucial to your game. It will also give you the opportunity to check out the driving line for the Par 4, 1st Hole (One indeed that Laura Davies in her recent win of the Irish Ladies Open drove through the green and onto the 2nd Tee Box behind!). However, don’t become complacent knowing the previous fact as a Par is always a welcome start.

You are always guaranteed a warm welcome at St Margaret’s. It is worth arrving early and spending the time to have a quick chat with John Kelly (Resident PGA Pro) or one of his team in the well equipped pro shop. Ensure that you pick up a stroke-saver (or “Birdie Book” as some of our European Neighbours know it), as it will certainly help you plot a course and get the most from your golfing day at the Par 73 Challenging Golf Course, that is St Margaret’s Golf Club. The River Ward flows through the golf course and appears in the most unsuspecting places, so be warned!

For those who like to get in some practice prior to playing John Kelly has one of the finest golf academy facilities in Ireland with Driving Range, Practice Green, Chipping Area and is always willing to help you work on your swing if required.

St Margaret’s provides a tough test to golfers of all abilities. No matter how many times you go back you will always be set a fresh challenge in terms of the choice of Tee-Boxes, Pin Positions and the prevailing winds. With all of this in mind St Margaret’s is not a course that will swallow you up and spit you out at the 18th hole, promising yourself that you will never play golf again. St Margaret’s won’t beat you, but rather you will come away thinking about the various birdie opportunities at the Par 5, 12th and the Par 5, 16th. You will never have felt better about carding a Par (or even bogey) at the intriguing Par 4, 7th Hole modelled on Augusta’s famous 12th and of course the signature Par 5, 8th Hole. This tough hole has you changing direction twice whilst also giving you a “make or break” 3rd shot across water to a well protected green.

Like all great golf courses St Margaret’s saves the best for last. Sam Torrance is quoted as saying that the 18th Hole at St Margaret’s is “the best finishing hole I have ever seen… and possibly the strongest and most exciting hole in the world”. It is a Par 4 “Dogleg left” towards the imposing club house; you will have to negotiate strategically well placed bunkers, Out of Bounds on the left hand side and a tranquil lake before finally coming to rest on the green. You will now certainly deserve a celebration Guinness in the Club House.
