Golf Club of the Month - April 2006 – Castleisland Golf Club, Kerry
Well, in the Kingdom of Kerry in south west Ireland which is famous for such courses as Ballybunion Golf Club, Tralee Golf Club and Waterville Links, you now have a parkland option of the highest quality in Castleisland Golf Club.
The course was built in 2002 on scenic piece of land overlooking the county of Kerry and commands a panoramic view of the McGillicuddy Reeks that form a backdrop to the Lakes of Killarney.
It has been built with modern sand based greens which ensures its playability throughout the year and they are a pleasure to play on. Although a recent development, the mature woodland and undulating terrain creates a gem of a golf course.
It start with a gentle Par 5 with an elevated green to get you in the mood and progresses to provide you with holes that that will test you’re your mettle and indeed every club in your bag.
The 8th hole is a classic Par 4 with a huge drive required over the gully to have any chance of hitting the large well protected green at the other side of the stream. It has been assigned the Index 1 but many people think that is a little lenient!
Castleisland County Kerry is a market town steeped in history. The town gets its name from the famous castle of the island-an island formed by turning the waters of the river maine into a moat around the castle, originally built in 1220 by Geoffrey De Marisco. For long the Desmond power in Kerry, the town was centre of much disorder and activity during the land war and the civil war of the 20th century.
Castleisland Golf Club is close to Kerry Airport at Farranfore and also just off the main road N21 from Dublin and should definitely be considered as part of your Irish Golfing Itinerary.
