Roganstown Golf Club

Club of the Month Archive

Roganstown Golf & Country Club, situated just north of Dublin Airport is recent addition to the many world class Golf Resorts & Golf Courses in Ireland...

Roganstown is steeped in history and roots can be traced back to Anglo-Norman Times.

Roganstown House itself has been incorporated into the hotel itself and gives visitors that a warm Georgian welcome upon arrival. What is unique about Roganstown Golf & County Club is that it is a family run enterprise and that translates to the service and the attention to detail by staff members to make your stay even more luxurious.

We are forgetting about the golf course itself as we give details on the hotel; however Roganstown Golf Club, since it was designed by the infamous Christy O’Connor Jnr has been receiving accolades and plaudits from the worldwide Golfing community.

Roganstown Golf Club surrounds the hotel, using the natural features of the land with a variety of water features including the Broadmeadow River. The course is designed to impress and with a series of well positioned bunkers throughout the course ensures that one must play strategically. The greens are among the best in Ireland and combine beautiful movements with speed and definition that will enthrall.

Roganstown starts with a testing Par 4 of 413 yards which lets you know that this is going to be “no walk in the park”, for the casual golfer a bogey would be a bonus! Next up is a testing Par 3 where the green must be hit in order to give yourself a chance. The greens are so testing that must putt well as you could easily be shortchanged.

It is hard to pick a signature hole on the course but a the 3 that stand out to me would be the 5th Hole (Par 5 504 Yards), 6th Hole (Par 3 182 Yards) and the 18th Hole (Par 5 565 Yards).

The 5th Hole, although reachable in two good shots, tests your driving ability with a lake on the right and a narrow gap across water to the green which means that you must hit a long drive down the fairway to have any chance. If you don’t go for the green in two it can be very easy to over hit your second because of the trees and the water. The is no need to describe the green because like all other 17th holes, it is well protected and a pleasure to putt on.

The 6th Hole is an extremely testing with water all the way up the right hand side, the green cuts into the water allowing for very tricky pin positions and is home to many a wet ball. I have even heard rumours of golfers laying up down the left hand side!

All good golf courses must have a strong finish, the 18th at Roganstown does not disappoint. It is a slightly downhill Par 5 towards the welcoming Roganstown House, there are plenty of bunkers and a little water but nothing to be scared of. It is just the icing on the cake after a great round and very possible to make a good score which can always swing the outcome of a competition.

The facilities at Roganstown are top class too with the famous Sakura Spa & Leisure Club worth a relaxing visit and of course McLoughlin’s Restaurant which is well reknowned for fine dining and of course O' Callaghan's Bar which is as good a place as any to talk through with your playing partners “What could have been”.
