Bull Bay Golf Club

Bull Bay occupies a high, rugged position on the northern coast of Anglesey, overlooking the Irish Sea and the rocky shoreline around Amlwch. The course was officially opened in August 1913, having been commissioned by the Marquis of Anglesey and designed by Herbert Fowler, with Tom Simpson also involved in its creation. Fowler made full use of the naturally undulating ground, producing a course notable for its elevation changes, blind shots and demanding carries.

The character of Bull Bay is wild and natural, with the terrain doing much of the defensive work. The course famously opened without artificial bunkers, relying instead on natural hollows, banks, rough and changes in elevation to punish inaccurate shots. Blind approaches and elevated greens are a recurring feature, while the views across the sea give the course a distinctly remote quality. It is a links that asks the golfer to accept uncertainty: many of the most interesting shots require trust in the line and an understanding of how the ground will influence the ball once it lands.
