Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club

Pyle & Kenfig lies among the dunes of the South Wales coast, close to the Kenfig Nature Reserve and only a short distance from Royal Porthcawl. Founded in 1922, the course was laid out initially by H.S. Colt, with Philip McKenzie Ross later extending and developing the layout into the 18-hole course played today. It is a genuine links environment, with extensive dunes, sandy ground and little to interrupt the influence of the coastal wind.

The character of Pyle & Kenfig changes markedly as the round progresses. The opening holes are relatively open and restrained, but the course becomes increasingly dramatic from the 11th onwards, where the fairways climb and twist through much larger dunes. The 11th is particularly memorable, a long par five turning through the dunes towards an elevated green, followed by a sequence of holes that feel increasingly remote from the clubhouse and surrounded by towering natural landforms. It is a course where line, imagination and control are often more important than raw distance.
