Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club

Royal Cinque Ports occupies a magnificent stretch of linksland at Deal on the Kent coast, close to Royal St George's and Prince's. Founded in 1892, the club quickly developed into one of England's major championship venues, with the 18-hole course completed in 1899. Its position beside Sandwich Bay creates a classic links landscape of dunes, ridges and firm-running fairways, while the prevailing wind adds another layer of difficulty to an already demanding course.

The course rewards strategic play and a willingness to use the contours of the ground rather than simply attack every hole through the air. Long par fours, substantial dunes and a series of memorable par threes create a varied examination, with the famous 16th standing out as one of the great holes on the links. Royal Cinque Ports hosted The Open Championship in 1909 and 1920, and although later editions were lost to wartime disruption and flooding, the course remains one of the defining links of the English south-east.
