Royal St. George’s Golf Club

Royal St George’s occupies an extensive dune system at Sandwich on the Kent coast, where large sandy ridges, undulating fairways and deep bunkers create a famously natural links landscape. Founded in 1887 by William Laidlaw Purves, the course was designed with the ambition of creating an English counterpart to the great links of Scotland.

The routing moves through some of the largest dunes found on an Open Championship course, with blind and partially blind shots adding to the character of the layout. Deep bunkers, uneven lies and changing coastal winds require golfers to judge both direction and trajectory carefully. As the first course outside Scotland to host The Open, Royal St George’s has a particularly important place in championship golf and retains a strong sense of traditional links character.
