Saunton Golf Club

Saunton Golf Club occupies the spectacular dune landscape of Braunton Burrows on the North Devon coast. Established in 1897, the club’s links layouts were shaped by Herbert Fowler, with Frank Pennink later contributing to the development of the courses played today.

Set among vast natural sandhills, deep dune valleys and sweeping coastal terrain, Saunton makes exceptional use of its surroundings. Elevated tees, generous fairways and dramatic changes in elevation create a strong sense of scale, while natural slopes and firm running turf encourage golfers to use the ground creatively. Large dunes frame many holes, providing both visual drama and strategic definition.

The layouts offer a varied mix of long par fours, doglegs, changes in direction and strategically positioned bunkers and hazards. While fairways can provide generous landing areas, the challenge becomes more exacting around the greens, where subtle slopes and firm surfaces demand careful approach play. The exposed coastal setting also ensures that wind is an ever-present factor, influencing club selection, positioning and the ideal line of play.
