Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Royal Birkdale occupies a magnificent stretch of linksland on the Southport coast, with wide fairways running through valleys between towering dunes. Founded in 1889, the club has developed into one of England’s great championship venues, with its modern layout shaped principally by Frederick G. Hawtree and J.H. Taylor.

The relatively flat fairways create an inviting appearance from the tee, but deep bunkers, thick rough and exposed coastal winds place a premium on accurate positioning. The course’s scale and routing provide a strong sense of movement through the dunes, while the famous 12th and demanding closing holes add to its championship character. With a long association with The Open, Royal Birkdale combines classic links strategy with a wonderfully natural setting.
