There is always great excitement and anticipation when the thought of a trip with your golfing buddies is upon you.
Why is it such a thing?
I have played golf at the highest level for the best part of 40 years. It has taken me all over the world, mostly playing against better players in the hope of finding that moment. We chase moments that bring us warmth and fulfilling experiences. Those situations later in life, when one is reflecting on what has gone before, can fill you with warmth. The same can be said of a magical trip or game with your golfing buddies.
It may seem like folly, but a game of golf, a good fourball with like-minded people, can have a profound impact. It is almost elevated over the course of an extended trip.
Golf is unique in that the handicap system can level the playing field. A 20-handicapper on a dream day could beat the world’s best. I’ve been the target with my mates my whole life. My competitive spirit never lets them away with it. But the day I lose to them is full of fun and banter. That edge is part of the beauty of the experience.
The escapism is palpable. Golf can be a reflection of your character and personality. We are all so different, and that melting pot provides wonderful chemistry. If you align that with the magical array of golf courses, it augurs well for a sensational experience.
We are blessed in Ireland to have over 400 golf courses on such a small island. The variety is exceptional. Famed links and outstanding parkland courses are sprinkled all over the country. What I love about going to these courses is that the experience is different every time. The people are very different too, and that variety brings a unique experience. The locals are so happy to welcome you and are always very proud of their course and what they have to offer.
It brings a huge sense of pride when you appreciate their course.
I’ve been blessed to live beside Co. Louth Golf Club for 26 years and to be the golf professional at The K Club for the last six years. I literally have two of the very best courses in Ireland at my disposal. The variety is unparalleled.
It is one of my ambitions to play as many courses in Ireland as I can before it is too late. I still have many to play and intend to try to add four or five every year.
